Healthcare systems worldwide are facing intense cost pressures due to the increase in chronic disease and unhealthy lifestyles, e.g., obesity, physical inactivity, and work-related stress. Coupled with growing demands for increased productivity in the competitive global marketplace national and multinational employers as well as most national governments are increasingly recognizing the fact that a more proactive and systematic approach to promoting employee health is required.

This book highlights how 21 key countries are addressing these challenges by focusing on the following areas regarding workplace health promotion: prevailing health issues and risk behaviors, existing healthcare systems, historical and cultural influences on both physical and mental health, key drivers for establishing global workplace health promotion programs, examples of best practices, key outcomes and success indicators, and existing research findings. Moving Forward - IIHP for 2010

1. Global IIHP Meeting and Conference in Shanghai, China, June 2010
The next global IIHP meeting will take place in Shanghai on June 20, 2010. Shanghai is one of the most dynamic cities in the world and host of the World Expo this year. Next to the IIHP planning meeting, Jiao Tong University will also host a two-day international conference on health promotion - "Better Life through Health Promotion" on June 18 & 19, 2010. The international conference will demonstrate the essential contribution of health promotion towards better life in general, and specifically in urban environments. Therefore, the theme of Expo 2010 "Better City, Better Life" will be highlighted and discussed from a positive health perspective. The latest research in health promotion in China and internationally as well as numerous case studies will be presented.

2. IIHP-sponsored Publication on Global Perspectives on Workplace Health Promotion
An exciting project involving the IIHP is in the works: a book on "Global Perspectives on Workplace Health Promotion" is being written under the leadership of Wolf Kirsten (International Health Consulting) and Bob Karch at American University. The book will feature 21 different country profiles with regard to workplace health promotion written by mostly IIHP members. Publication is envisioned for September 2010.

3. Core Curriculum in Workplace Health Promotion
Due to its strong academic foundation and having numerous prestigious universities as members the IIHP has made it a priority to advance the education and training of health promotion professionals. It was agreed upon that a pressing need for standardization of health promotion degrees and training exists internationally and that a core curriculum should be outlined for health promotion. As a first step, it was decided to establish a core curriculum for health promotion at the workplace. The major curriculum components were agreed upon during the global meeting in Washington, DC, in November of 2008.

It is envisioned that training programs worldwide will follow the IIHP core curriculum which allows for sufficient adaptations based on the given culture and local systems. An additional planned step is the development of certification programs which adhere to the core curriculum.
